Balenciaga: From Couture Heritage to Streetwear Luxury
Cristóbal Balenciaga, the Spanish master couturier called "the king's tailor" by Christian Dior, founded his Parisian house in 1937. He was considered the supreme technical genius of 20th-century couture — his architecturally structured silhouettes and innovative use of stiff fabrics to create sculptural forms around the body were without peer. He closed his house in 1968, and it was revived by Gucci Group (now Kering) in 1986 as a ready-to-wear brand.
The modern Balenciaga was shaped decisively by Nicolas Ghesquière (1997–2012) and then Demna Gvasalia (2015–present). Ghesquière invented the brand's leather goods vocabulary — the City bag with its supple leather and hardware details became a cult object among the fashion-forward. Demna Gvasalia (known simply as Demna) pushed the brand into entirely new territory: oversized silhouettes, streetwear references, extreme proportions, and a confrontational relationship with fashion convention that made Balenciaga the most discussed brand of the late 2010s.
Demna's Balenciaga has been both the most lauded and most controversial luxury brand of the 2020s. The Triple S sneaker (2017) and Speed Runner (2017) launched the luxury sneaker arms race. Couture collections using unconventional materials (trash bags, destroyed jeans) challenged luxury conventions. The 2022 advertising scandal caused significant short-term damage but the brand's core buyer base has remained loyal, and resale values have substantially recovered.
