Understanding Diamond Fluorescence
Diamond fluorescence is the visible light some diamonds emit when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. About 25-35% of diamonds exhibit some degree of fluorescence, most commonly blue. GIA grades fluorescence as None, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong. The phenomenon is caused by submicroscopic features within the diamond's crystal structure.
The market traditionally discounts fluorescent diamonds, particularly in higher color grades (D-F). However, GIA's own research has shown that in most cases, fluorescence has no perceptible effect on a diamond's appearance in normal lighting conditions. This creates a value opportunity for informed buyers who can purchase beautiful diamonds at a discount.
For diamonds in the I-M color range, medium blue fluorescence can actually be beneficial -- the blue fluorescence counteracts the yellowish tint visible in these lower color grades, making the diamond appear whiter. This is one of the best-kept secrets in diamond buying and can save buyers 5-15% while getting a better-looking stone.
