Frequently Asked Questions

How much is an emerald worth per carat?
Emeralds range from $50/ct commercial to over $50,000/ct for exceptional untreated Colombian stones. Fine Colombian emeralds with minor oil typically sell for $3,000-$15,000 per carat.
Are Colombian emeralds the best?
Colombian emeralds from Muzo and Chivor are considered the finest for their pure green color. Zambian emeralds offer excellent quality at lower prices. Both origins produce world-class stones.
Is oiling emeralds acceptable?
Minor oiling is widely accepted and nearly universal. It reduces value by 10-20% vs untreated. Moderate oil reduces by 30-50%. Significant oil/resin reduces by 60-80%. Check lab reports for treatment disclosure.

Understanding Emerald Prices

Emeralds are among the "Big Three" colored gemstones alongside rubies and sapphires. Unlike those corundum varieties, emeralds (beryl) are almost always included -- the trade accepts more inclusions in emeralds than in any other gemstone. These inclusions are poetically called "jardin" (French for garden) and are often considered part of the stone's character.

Colombian emeralds from the Muzo and Chivor mines are the most prized, known for their pure green color with a warm undertone. Zambian emeralds, particularly from the Kagem mine, offer a slightly different aesthetic -- a cooler, bluish-green with often better clarity. The choice between Colombian and Zambian is partly a matter of taste, though the market consistently pays premiums for Colombian origin.

Treatment is a critical factor in emerald valuation. Nearly all emeralds undergo some form of oil or resin treatment to enhance clarity. "No oil" emeralds are extremely rare and command premiums of 2-5x over similar stones with minor oil. Lab reports from GRS, Gubelin, or SSEF are essential for high-value emeralds, as they provide detailed treatment analysis.
