Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between machine, laser, and hand engraving?
Machine engraving uses a rotating cutter to carve into metal, creating a slightly rough but deep impression. Laser engraving uses focused light to vaporize a thin layer of metal, producing very fine detail and photographic-quality images. Hand engraving is done by a skilled artisan with a graver tool, creating unique, artistic impressions with depth and character that machine methods cannot replicate.
Can engraving be removed?
Machine and hand engraving can often be polished out if the engraving is shallow, though this removes a thin layer of metal. Deep engravings may require the surface to be filled and re-finished. Laser engraving, being very shallow, is typically easier to polish away. However, removal always carries some risk of altering the piece's appearance.
What metals can be engraved?
Gold, silver, and platinum are easily engraved by all methods. Titanium and tungsten are extremely hard and can only be engraved by laser. Stainless steel requires laser or specialized machine engraving. Very thin or hollow pieces may not support deep engraving without risk of perforation.
Does engraving weaken a ring?
Standard text engraving on the inside of a ring removes a negligible amount of metal and does not meaningfully affect structural integrity. Deep exterior engraving on thin bands could potentially weaken the piece. A professional jeweler will assess whether a piece can safely support the desired engraving before proceeding.
How many characters fit inside a ring?
A standard ring interior fits approximately 20-30 characters depending on ring size, band width, and font size. Wider bands (6mm+) can accommodate more text or larger fonts. Laser engraving allows for smaller, more precise characters than machine engraving, fitting more text in the same space. Your jeweler can advise on the maximum for your specific piece.

The Art and Science of Jewelry Engraving

Jewelry engraving transforms ordinary pieces into deeply personal heirlooms. Whether adding a wedding date to a ring, a family crest to a signet, or a heartfelt message to a bracelet, engraving adds emotional value that far exceeds its modest cost. Understanding the different methods, their capabilities, and their limitations helps you choose the right approach for each project.

The craft of engraving has evolved dramatically from its purely hand-worked origins. Modern jewelry buyers can choose from three primary methods, each with distinct advantages: machine engraving for reliable, affordable text; laser engraving for ultra-fine detail and images; and hand engraving for artistic, one-of-a-kind expressions that carry the mark of a skilled artisan's hand.

Machine Engraving

Machine engraving remains the most widely available and affordable option for text inscription. Modern computer-controlled machines offer consistent results with a variety of fonts. The process physically removes metal, creating a tactile groove that can be felt with a fingertip. Machine engraving works best for straight text on flat or slightly curved surfaces and is the standard choice for wedding ring inscriptions, date commemorations, and short messages.

Laser Engraving

Laser engraving uses focused light energy to precisely mark metal surfaces. It can reproduce photographic images, detailed logos, fingerprints, and handwriting with extraordinary precision. Laser is the only method capable of engraving extremely hard metals like tungsten carbide and titanium. The resulting mark is very shallow but permanent, with incredible detail resolution down to fractions of a millimeter.

Hand Engraving

Hand engraving by a master engraver represents the pinnacle of the craft. Each cut is made individually with specialized tools called gravers, allowing the artisan to control depth, width, and angle of every stroke. The result is a richly dimensional, artistic rendering that catches light in ways that machine and laser methods cannot replicate. Hand engraving costs significantly more but creates genuinely unique pieces of wearable art.
