Frequently Asked Questions

How much is jade worth?
Imperial jadeite can reach $3,000-$30,000+/ct. Fine jadeite $500-$3,000/ct. Commercial jadeite $10-$100/ct. Nephrite jade $1-$50/ct. The most expensive jade piece ever sold was $27.4 million.
What is the difference between jadeite and nephrite?
Jadeite is rarer, harder, comes in more colors, and can be translucent. Nephrite is more common, slightly softer, typically green to cream, and generally opaque. Fine jadeite can be 100-1000x more valuable.
What color jade is most valuable?
Imperial green jadeite - vivid, saturated emerald green with high translucency - is most valuable. Lavender jadeite is second. For nephrite, deep spinach green from Russia or New Zealand commands the highest prices.

Understanding Jade Values

Jade holds a unique position in the gemstone world, revered for over 7,000 years across multiple civilizations. In Chinese culture, jade is considered more precious than gold, symbolizing virtue, beauty, and eternal life. The jade market is one of the largest colored gemstone markets globally, driven primarily by Asian demand, with auction records regularly exceeding those of diamonds and other precious stones.

Jadeite Grading and Treatment

The jade trade uses a unique grading system based on treatment. Type A jade is completely natural and commands the highest prices. Type B jade has been bleached to remove brown stains and filled with polymer resin, reducing value by 80-90%. Type C jade has been dyed, and Type B+C has been both treated and dyed. Always request a gemological certificate when purchasing significant jade pieces.

For jadeite, the combination of vivid imperial green color, glass-like translucency, and fine texture creates what the Chinese call "laokeng" (old mine) quality - the most desirable and valuable jade possible. These pieces are increasingly rare as original Myanmar mines produce fewer high-quality stones, driving prices steadily upward for certified natural jadeite.
