Understanding Pearl Value
Pearls are the only gemstone created by a living organism, and their value has been prized for thousands of years. Modern cultured pearls come in four main types: Akoya (from Japanese and Chinese oysters), White South Sea (from Australian and Indonesian oysters), Golden South Sea (from Philippine and Indonesian oysters), and Tahitian (from French Polynesian black-lip oysters).
Size is a major value driver -- pearl prices increase exponentially with size because larger pearls require longer growing times and have higher failure rates. A 15mm South Sea pearl can be worth 5-10x more than an 11mm pearl of similar quality. Shape matters too: perfectly round pearls are the most valuable, followed by near-round, oval, drop, and baroque.
Luster is often considered the most important quality factor. High-luster pearls display sharp, mirror-like reflections and a deep inner glow. This is directly related to nacre quality and thickness. For investment-grade pearl strands, uniformity of matching across all pearls is critical -- a perfectly matched strand of 50 pearls requires sorting through thousands of individual pearls.
