Frequently Asked Questions

How much are pearls worth?
Values range from $20 for freshwater to $20,000+ for golden South Sea pearls. Natural pearls can sell for $50,000-$500,000+ at auction. Size, type, luster, and shape all impact value.
What makes a pearl valuable?
Seven factors: type, size, shape, luster, surface quality, nacre thickness, and color/overtone. For strands, matching quality is crucial -- uniform pearls command significant premiums.
Are natural pearls more valuable than cultured?
Yes, natural pearls are 10-100x more valuable than cultured pearls of similar size. Natural pearls are extremely rare. All modern pearl jewelry uses cultured pearls, which are real pearls grown with human assistance.

Understanding Pearl Value

Pearls are the only gemstone created by a living organism, and their value has been prized for thousands of years. Modern cultured pearls come in four main types: Akoya (from Japanese and Chinese oysters), White South Sea (from Australian and Indonesian oysters), Golden South Sea (from Philippine and Indonesian oysters), and Tahitian (from French Polynesian black-lip oysters).

Size is a major value driver -- pearl prices increase exponentially with size because larger pearls require longer growing times and have higher failure rates. A 15mm South Sea pearl can be worth 5-10x more than an 11mm pearl of similar quality. Shape matters too: perfectly round pearls are the most valuable, followed by near-round, oval, drop, and baroque.

Luster is often considered the most important quality factor. High-luster pearls display sharp, mirror-like reflections and a deep inner glow. This is directly related to nacre quality and thickness. For investment-grade pearl strands, uniformity of matching across all pearls is critical -- a perfectly matched strand of 50 pearls requires sorting through thousands of individual pearls.
